Arups on Engineering was published to celebrate the 50 anniversary of the founding of Arup by Ove Arup In 1946. This book reveals the depths of the international firm of designers across 30 essays by some of its members. Several disciplines in the book in the line of “total design“, posts in this miniseries will focus on the texts related to the structural design.
The analysis of the book will focus on three parts: Learning Society, overall design and the "keynote speech" of Ove Arup.
Since the beginning of the book Arup shown itself as a learning society that tries to solve the problems of their clients through the development of new construction techniques and analytical. This strong commitment to expanding the boundaries of the traditional places Arup professionals at the forefront of research and development in many fields. An example of this is Advanced Geometry unit led by Cecil Balmond.
This concept of lifelong learning has been one of the ingredients that have made a firm Arup international success. The promotion applies to learning at all levels of the company without distinction between disciplines and hierarchies.
The book reflects the conscious decision to extend the training of professionals outside the field of expertise. The full integration of the designer in society is seen as a prerequisite for solving problems efficiently and optimally.
