About Frame and Form (estructura y forma) was born with the modest desire to promote and disseminate structural design culture. The content of this blog is based on small articles where synthesized information is provided about accomplishments , events, history, contests and curiosities of marked structural works like bridges or buildings. These capsules of information intended [...]

p style=”text-align: justify;”> Reciprocal structures are defined as a set of self-supported elements in a closed circuit, a fairly complete definition but difficult to digest without a good graphic example. The following image shows the simplest arrangement of a reciprocal frame: three bars that overlap to bear on each other and achieve a simple and elegant structural equilibrium.

At first glance, this chair may seem out of a science fiction film, but in reality it is a real design inspired by the work of the teacher Antoni Gaudí. The chair and stool, designed by Dutchman Bram Geenen, use the same structural design methodology used by Gaudí 1900, hanging chain models that reproduce the most effective geometries arches, vaults and domes… The catenary curve.

From 19 th to 24 th Barcelona hosted SmartGeometry 2010, an annual event for architects and engineers focused on exploring the benefits and improvements of the use of innovative tools for designing new forms of formal and structural expression. Frame and Form had the pleasure of being invited as specialised press on structural design and the pursuit of advanced forms. Under these lines, the event report.

Combining chemistry, mathematics and architecture, but mainly based on the rhythms and patterns observed in nature, Cecil Balmond leads us in the exploring of new forms and structures.

Ago 20 years ago Theo Jansen has been devoted in body and soul to ‘creation’ new forms of life. Their ‘Strandbeest‘ (Beasts of the Beach) organizational structures that are so remote from the giant insects appear or skeletons of prehistoric animals. Actually, these dynamic structures were designed by computer algorithms and are composed of waste materials from the industrial era.

These ‘creatures’ move without motors, not have advanced sensors and the latest technology to 'survive’ on the shores Netherlands…

Lately we have been researching flags and how they become (or rather they have always been) experimental laboratory structures and forms. Its small size and temporary characterize them as unique pieces which apply ‘at’ the latest techniques and trends. Designs based on structural geometries manufactured by CNC systems [...]

tensegrity, basic principle named after Buckminster Fuller (1895-1983) mid-twentieth century that applies to structures that are equipped with tensional integrity (Tensegrity = tensional + integrity). A Tensegrity system is one that is in a steady state self-balanced and consists of a set of discontinuous compression components within [...]
