About

Frame and Form (estructura y forma) was born with the modest desire to promote and disseminate structural design culture. The content of this blog is based on small articles where synthesized information is provided about accomplishments , events, history, contests and curiosities of marked structural works like bridges or buildings. These capsules of information intended [...]

Bridge of the week: Nesenbachtalbrücke

The tubular structure is rarely applied in the design of bridges; is more suited to large roofs in sport or fair pavilions. Today we present difficult to establish a structure that shows an original example of the use of tubular lattice in the design of bridges.

Most probably Jörg Schlaich embodies the archetype of structural designer. He and his team are the masterminds of the Nesenbach Valley Bridge, a hybrid work in functional, footbridge and roadbridge, and from the structural point of view: integral bridge, ie, jointless and bearingless, and composite deck with tubular metal frame.

Bridge of the week: Pont Trencat

Restoring the Broken Bridge is a special work, difficult to categorize or classify, it is a meeting point between history, architecture and engineering. Presents an unusual approach in the restoration of bridges, because instead of restoring the bridge to its previous state, has chosen to build a new and modern structure, which completes the remains of old bridge.

Bridge of the week: Ponte della Costituzione

Ponte della Costituzione is the 4th bridge over Grand Canal of Venice. It was designed, involved in controversy, by Santiago Calatrava. Although it is difficult to ignore it, In Frame and Form we will try to put aside any criticism, especially the media-political one, and we will try to analyse the just the footbridge design.

Calatrava's works, and especially bridges, usually have a high visual impact. However, This gateway is different from previous works. It is designed to stress without imposing, as it is located in an urban environment of high architectural and historical value. By place (Grand Canal) and opportunity (is the first bridge built in Venice for decades) this is a historic bridge that must endure as an example of architecture of his time; Probably that is the reason for the choice of Calatrava as a designer for this project, because like it or not want, This has changed the way architects design bridges.

Bridge of the week: Linn Cove Viaduct

Linn Cove Viaduct is a bridge that was built over 25 years ago (In 1983), but it is a stark example of a structure in which design we find modern values such as technological innovation, landscape integration, and a proper respect for the environment.

This structure was designed by Jean Muller and Eugene Figg, and built by Jasper Construction Company. The viaduct, following an S-shaped alignment, skirts the slopes of the Grandfather mountain in North Carolina.

Bridge of the week: Traversina Step II

In March 1999, an avalanche of rocks destroyed the Traversina Steg I. From misfortune came a new opportunity for designers Conzett Bronzini Gartmann. After analyzing the accident, it was decided to build a new walkway 70 m away from the former location. These developments inspired a different structure than the first but just as bold.

Bridge of the week: Traversina Steg I

Switzerland, in a gorge called Viamala, built in 1996 , the Traversina Steg I footbridge perched its geometries. With a spectacular design of wood and steel cable, was short-lived because a rock avalanche destroyed it in 1999.

The design of the bridge is the work of Conzett Bronzini Gartmann. Structurally we can speak of a simple supported truss, but it is outstanding because two main things : the lower lattice work and the upper channel board.

Bridge of the week: Hardanger Bridge

The largest bridge in Norway is currently being built (8th largest in the world); a suspension bridge called Hardanger Bridge. Aside from its enormous size that seems to wane in the immensity of the 2nd longest fjord in Norway (Hardangerfjord), the careful design of all its elements amazed us, including access design, which shows that in the technological frontiers of engineering there is space for technology and structural art.

The Trift bridge in the Swiss Alps

Over the Thrift glacier tip in the Swiss Alps, this year, has been constructed a spectacular suspension bridge. The 170 meters long bridge describe a perfect Catenary over a 100 meters above the glacier. The structural design of the bridge responds with simplicity to the extreme conditions of high mountain:, Minimum temperatures, Heavy snow, winds and not forgetting the vibrations caused by pedestrians crossing the void…

Krúsrak Bridge. Wood at the highest level

Last 15 April a new bridge was inaugurated in the Dutch city of Sneek. The sexy wooden structure attracts attention of drivers on the motorway A7 passing beneath. This design represents an important step towards the use of sustainable materials in the higher-level structures.

It all started when the government of the Netherlands province of Friesland and the Public Works Department expressed the desire to use more wood in their buildings…

Kurilpa Bridge

Yesterday was inaugurated “Kurilpa Bridge” and Brisbane, without doubt a special bridge for many reasons.

First, surprisingly, this design is the result of a design contest and play. This is a joint proposal Baulderstone Pty Ltd (construction company), Cox Rayner Architects and Arup Engineers.

Bridge of the week: Infinity Bridge (II)

Bridges ancient treaties gave preference to bridges with an odd number of openings (1 or 3) justified by increased drainage capacity through a central span, and consecrated by an identification of the beauty through the symmetry of the elevation. It is rare to find an old bridge that [...]

Bridge of the week: Lake Austin footbridge
