Quadror, joint, structure, design, inspiration…

A few days ago, my good friend Gustavo showed me this piece from The New York Times. Although at first I could not understand how this design works, something hooked me from the first gesture. The author defines as QuaDror “a new structural join for spaceframes that unfolds manifold design initiatives and can adapt to various conditions and configurations”. An ambitious definition that encouraged me even more to try to understand its functioning and potential.

Bridge Week: Nesenbachtalbrücke

The tubular structure is rarely applied in the design of bridges; is more suited to large roofs in sport or fair pavilions. Today we present difficult to establish a structure that shows an original example of the use of tubular lattice in the design of bridges.

Most probably Jorg Schlaich embodies the archetype of structural designer. He and his team are the masterminds of the Nesenbach Valley Bridge, a hybrid work in functional, footbridge and roadbridge, and from the structural point of view: integral bridge, that is, jointless and bearingless, and composite deck with tubular metal frame.

Bird Observatory over the Ebro river

Following the series of short articles on wood structural performances, we present this bird observatory on the river Ebro. Unlike other observatories such as the ornithological Graswarder, This viewpoint is not erected as a tower but it adapts to the rugged terrain on the banks of the river Ebro in bold extending cantilever.

Past spring the Ebro River saw a new structure approaching its waters…

Then present this observation tower for bird reserve Graswarder, belonging to the Baltic resort of Heiligenhafen, Germany.

Combining the functionality of the tower with the trajectory of the stairs in two tranches, designers…

Theo Jansen – Kinetic Structures

Ago 20 years ago Theo Jansen has been devoted in body and soul to ‘creation’ new forms of life. Their ‘Strandbeest‘ (Beasts of the Beach) organizational structures that are so remote from the giant insects appear or skeletons of prehistoric animals. Actually, these dynamic structures were designed by computer algorithms and are composed of waste materials from the industrial era.

These ‘creatures’ move without motors, not have advanced sensors and the latest technology to 'survive’ on the shores Netherlands…
